Addictions Treatment in the Observant Jewish Community: Challenges and Opportunities in Working with the Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox
The Observant community of Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox families has traditionally been resistant to outside interventions for alcohol and substance use disorders. This training will address the stigma around seeking treatment, and provide important guidance utilizing cultural competence and sensitivity in enacting effective, evidence based interventions. Additionally, information pertaining to education and policy regarding Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders will be discussed. Orthodox Jewish religion, culture, lore along with intergenerational transmission of trauma will be discussed as it pertains to addiction treatment. Navigating telehealth during COVID with the particular difficulties this creates for the Orthodox community will also be covered.
